  • The S&P 500 and NASDAQ indices rose in May by 4% and 6.9%, respectively, with year-to-date increases of 9.8% and 11.5%.

  • The Federal Open Market Committee minutes from the latest meeting on April 30th and May 1st showed a willingness to tighten monetary policy if necessary.

  • The composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) was surprisingly strong in May, rising from 51.3 in April to 55.4.

  • Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split, with its quarterly dividend increasing from $0.04 to $0.10 per share. The company also reported a 262% increase in revenue for its first fiscal quarter, with earnings up 461%.

  • The S&P 500 index includes 65 technology stocks, of which only 10 have risen after Nvidia’s earnings report.

  • At The Family Office, we recommend reducing portfolio volatility by focusing on alternative investments such as private equity, private credit, and real estate. Liquidity can also help reduce volatility.

  • Several factors might contribute to an increase in volatility:

    • When or whether the Federal Reserve (the “Fed”) will cut interest rates.

    • Economic growth, which is the most important factor.

    • Presidential debates in the US scheduled for June and September, which are not likely to cause volatility but are expected to generate significant media coverage.
